the verse comes from Matthew, the sermon on the mount, also known as "the beatitudes". this one in particular is one of my favorites because i know it to be true. genuine hungering and thirsting for God always fills us like nothing else. like Jeremiah 29:13 that says "you will seek me and find me, when you seek me with your whole heart".
what a special promise. He can be found, He wants to be known, and He will fill our deepest longings. i'm not sure if there's anything in all the human existence better than that. a God who loves us, who died for us, and who still wants an intimate relationship with us after all that we've done to mess it up.
just recently i started reading A Beautiful Offering by Angela Thomas. and wouldn't you know, the entire book is based on the beatitudes. in fact, she goes through each one, chapter by chapter.
you guys, this chapter? the one about hungering and thirsting for righteousness? it completely messed me up in the best possible way. i'll just give you a few quotes instead of trying to explain it myself:
Life is a beautiful offering when you are crying out for God to come and make you hungry for His righteousness, because He is the only One who will satisfy your spiritual appetite with the food that can fill your soul.
It's beautiful when you surrender to your spiritual appetite and do whatever it takes to feed your soul with My goodness, My virtue, and My example. I love it when you run after My right living like you cannot survive without it.
We're going to hear it over and over in this sermon: Jesus guides us toward Christ-likeness and yet remembers the fallenness of our humanity.
What if we just went for it and decided to fall in love with Jesus more deeply than we have ever known? What would that look like? What would it feel like? You may not be perfect in your desire, but when you are hungry for God, He moves in with the filling of His blessing.
Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father, preparing an eternity for you and for me. And the eyes of God search the earth for those who would humble themselves, fall upon His mercy, and beg Him to make them thirsty again. Our God is able, so very able, to fill you and me with renewed passion for righteousness. He is more than ready to make us hungry. He can't wait to watch us fall in love again.
i'll just tell you once: you need to read this book. paperback here, kindle here, or the Bible study here.
